Fresh Lobster

There is nothing like fresh lobster, caught off the boat, brought into the restaurant and cooked. The local fisherpeople in Newport are the best.  This was our view every morning, high atop Narragansett Bay.

Lobster Roll at The Clarke Cooke House in Newport with fries and Cole Slaw.  We loved the vibe here, absolutely preppy central, classic Newport on a fine night.

Carol, Dean and Jason, all enjoying a glass of Riesling from Newport Vineyards.  Nice sip.  And, yes, we had the most enviable window table in the place.

Great dinner. Great laughs. Great friends.

Patio Dining At Parish Cafe

Parish Café on Boylston Street has been a stalwart of comfort food and fine drinks for quite a while now.  In fact, it's been twenty-five years!  To celebrate the anniversary we stopped by on an absolutely beautiful evening recently to revisit and enjoy the patio dining.

We began with a pitcher of White Sangria, a super refreshing sip on a warm summer's day.  It looked so good that we actually inspired several other tables to go with the sangria, too.

As part of the anniversary fun the Café is bringing back some of the classic sandwiches created by local chefs over the years.  What you're looking at above is known to regulars as The Lydia, as in Lydia Shire.  More than just a lobster roll, this is a full lobster sandwich on a country white bread and loaded with lobster meat.

Then, of course, there are the famous beer-battered onion rings known as the Bowl-O-Rings.  They are served with this house-made chipotle aioli.  They are surprisingly light and a perennial favorite with diners.

The Vegetarian Corn Cakes are pan-seared then baked then served with pico de gallo and sliced avocado and topped with a scallion-mustard remoulade.

I opted for Sean's Meatball Club sandwich created by Sean Simmons the Chef and owner.  A thick slab of stick-to-your ribs meatloaf sits atop a layer of applewood smoked bacon, again on a country white.  It's served up with garlic mashed potatoes and gravy.  What could be more comfort food than that?

Sean's Simple Chicken is a take on chicken piccata and the most popular dish on the menu.  A breaded cutlet sautéed in chicken stock, olive oil and fresh lemon juice with capers.  Another comfort food classic, it's no wonder that it's become the most-requested.

Dessert, as if we needed it, was the White Chocolate Bread Pudding.  Brioche bread joins a fresh custard with whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle.

As we've been saying for the past month this is the time to fully enjoy patio dining and this summer has provided many cooler nights just made for alfresco dinners.  Don't let the season pass you by.  For comfort classics that have been bringing people back for twenty-five years you just can't go wrong at Parish Café.

Brunch At Joe's Newbury Street

It's the holidays.  More than likely you'll be having at least one brunch out with friends or family.  We always get asked for good brunch locations so when Joe's on Newbury Street invited us to a recent get-together we couldn't say no.

First, the place is on Boston's most fashionable street, Newbury Street, and second, it's a stone's throw from Copley and Prudential Center, the two others.

It's a nice crowd that runs the gamut from frat boys to families with plenty of room for everyone.

We began with Bellinis and appetizers like the Pork Sliders, Tuna Tartare and Deviled Eggs, which were a surprising hit.  It always amazes me how this retro plate is popular with everyone no matter where one goes.

My main was the Lobster Fritatta which was very good and the perfect texture.

Also good was the Eggs Benedict with potatoes that were excellent.

Although I did not sample the Bagels And Lox myself, the salmon looked very good and I liked the way you are left to construct the plate your own way.

And, of course, this being a blogger event there were tons of pictures to be had.

And then more pictures, always the food writer's dilemma:  do you make every photo the best it can be or jump into the food before it starts to get cold?

The other thing I like about Joe's on Newbury is that it literally never closes.  They are open 365 days a year including holidays.  They are also now open for breakfast.  In fact, we were told by the Chef that most of the staff lives nearby so that even in snowstorms and blizzards you can be pretty certain they will be open when no one else is.  So don't be snowed in and stir crazy.  That's often one of the best times to go!
