Cakeology Shop Is Open

Up until now Cakeology has been known as Boston's Mobile Cupcakery. Well, not any more!

They just opened a new shop in the heart of the City (near the Omni Parker House) and will be featuring all of their famous sweet treats in case you'd like to stop in.

The location should make it a convenient choice for work events and special client visits, as well as all the tourists that seem to flock to this area.

Freshii Boston

We visited the brand new Freshii, Boston's newest breakfast and lunch spot in the Financial District, recently and loved the hi-tech hi-green atmosphere.

The second you step in you are handed a mini clipboard to design your order. It may be a bit intimidating for the newbie but it's not all that complicated. The beauty is that it will allow you to order up a custom lunch, maybe gluten free, veggie only, whatever you want. If you are in a rush you can also order online. (As an aside, I am always amazed that so few people order take-out online. I think they fear no one is paying attention to the online orders.)

If you can't decipher it at all there are ambassadors to assist. Just tell them what you want and they will do the rest.

It gets very busy at lunch but the line is very efficient and immaculately clean.

We went with the Warrior Chicken Bowl, spicy and one of the best sellers.

We also sampled the Bangkok Burrito: chicken, brown rice, veggies and warm peanut sauce. Took half of this home for breakfast with iced tea the next day.

On these warm and sunny days they have outdoor seating with umbrellas. When the weather gets cold outside we are told they will have seating in the spectacular lobby at 100 High Street.

Stutesy's In Moody

We are a few weeks late with our recap of our visit to Stutesy's Pub & Grill in Moody. A very casual, relaxed environment where locals seem to gather (the parking lot is always full) to relax, enjoy a beer and get some decent pub food. The large-screen plasma TVs would also make it an ideal way to enjoy viewing a sports event with a group of friends.

The menu is exactly what you'd expect at a local sports bar. Burgers, fried seafood, steak tips and a few salads and appetizers, very basic fare.

We did sample the steak tips, which were quite good and seem to be the most popular item on the menu.

We also tried the Seafood Combo, which included halibut, scallops and shrimp. Plenty of scallops here, we enjoyed our baked with that buttered crumb topping.

Again, simple, diner type fare and good values at this little hole in the wall pub.

Shock Top Floating Mural By Stan Herd

How's this for a spectacular way to showcase your brand?

We sipped Shock Top Pumpkin Ale last night at Legal Harborside, an absolutely gorgeous setting for a sunset cocktail party hosted by Shock Top. The highlight of the evening was when this giant floating mural was tugged in for us to view from high atop the third level. Created by artist Stan Herd, it was created using 5200 square feet of flotillas and took 3 weeks to assemble. The Pumpkin Ale is very good (so is the Raspberry Wheat Ale), the food was great, the setting is breathtaking but I just love it when some showstopper like this happens.

The mural will be tugged around the Seaport over the next few days and they will also be serving up free samples of the Ale!

Here's the schedule:

Friday 8/26
12:30-2:30 PM Barking Crab (88 Sleeper St)
4:00-6:00 PM Joe’s American Bar and Grill (100 Atlantic Ave)
The Landing (1 Long wharf)

Saturday 8/27
3:30-5:30 PM No Name Restaurant (15 Fish Pier St W)
6:00-8:00 PM Atlantic Beer Garden (146 Northern Ave)
Whiskey Priest (150 Northern Ave)

So get out there and enjoy the brews, and the floating mural, before the storm hits!

freshii Boston

I love being the first Boston food blogger inside a new place. Even when it's tucked away in the financial district with lines out the door, we are there.

Darryl's Corner, South End

Although Darryl's Corner is a rebirth in itself, newly defined and designed, it still reflects the jazzy, eclectic craziness of a South End that once was. We really enjoyed a party pit stop there last night for cocktails, live music, nice snacks and a thoroughly enjoyable and quite chatty crowd, all thanks to yet another Stuff Magazine V.I.P invite.

It was very cool to see Jimmy Guzmán, General Manager of Bulfinch Hotel. We chatted about the hotel biz, Pura Vida bracelets, growing up in Boston and SOMEONE'S upcoming trip to Nashville. I've never been to Nashville. I expect a full report.

Kel ... you are always the center of attention at every party.

Mikal was there, of course, with his ever-growing entourage.

And, I must say, looking better than ever, but standing next to me who doesn't look good?

We sipped on these complimentary cocktails, courtesy of Absolut Vodka, and snacked on some of the best fried chicken I've had in Boston.

Back To School Giveaway

"When I was a youngun all we did was study." Grandpa

When I was at college all we did was swim, study and eat. Well, we slept, once in a while. The eating, not so much.

So, that's why we want to give some free codes away to college students nationwide in need of hungry take-out, nearby pizza or burritos, wings, salads, sushi or anything else on the menu. The rules: write us about how much you miss, or don't miss, home. The most inventive, creative, descriptive, colorful first five writers win. Yeah, spelling counts. We'll be the judge. And, oh yes M.I.T., you can win more than once, before you get on me with the technical questions. And, no, you technically don't have to be a college student. You can just write us and say what you hated most about living at home when you actually lived at home, no matter how long ago that was.

This freebie is sponsored by Campusfood. One $10 code to each winner (you can win all) and is totally valid through Spring Semester, June 2012. Simply post your response here as a comment or email to TBFWilliam@gmail.com. Contest ends Friday, September 2, 2011. Winners announced the following Monday.

The Blue Room

Appetizer of Duck Breast and Citrus Sections.

We recently dined at The Blue Room in Kendall Square, an oft-overlooked gem that we haven't ventured into for years now. Shame on us! It's really a great spot in the heart of technology central in Cambridge. The menu changes quite often due to their dedication to excellent sourcing but everything, literally, we tasted was beautifully done. If you are in the mood for rustic, Mediterranean fare, comforting and simply prepared in a funky setting, you can't go wrong here.

The Antipasto Plate with Crisped Flatbread. I am used to seeing more cheeses on an antipasto salad but this was perfectly acceptable.

I ordered the Crystal Valley Chicken with Swiss Chard, Fried Capers and Garlic Mashed Potato. Perfectly done and beautifully herbed, moist and flavorful.

Flank Steak with Fingerling Potato.

This Pesto Risotto we shared was excellent.

Berry Crisp. The desserts we all shared were amazingly good.

Red Bull Extreme Diving Boston 2011 Ouch!

What a great afternoon at the Boston waterfront today, where we joined thousands in the hot sun to see some crazy guys jump off the ICA into the cold water 80 feet below. As usual, Red Bull put on another fun and entertaining sports event.

The Last Of Food Pic Week

Bruschetta from Seafood Depot.

Fried Shrimp from 606 Congress. This Seaport District restaurant is one of the most underrated in this thriving area. You really should visit and try some of the inventive dishes from Chef Rich Garcia.

Jelly Doughnut and Glazed Minis from Congdon's in Wells, Maine. Yeah, it's not in the Boston area but we always have to throw a curve to end the week.

More Food Pics

Scallop Plate at Foundry On Elm.

Grilled Pineland Farm Sirloin Steak from Chef Peter Davis of Henrietta's Table. By the way, this restaurant is perhaps the best value during Restaurant Week. Not only is the food great, the are sustainability award winners and you order your three RW courses off the regular menu. The only difference is the price. Amazing deal!

Mini Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Frosting from Modern Pastry.
