Burrito Bowl III

I think I am the only food blogger in Boston who has covered all three of Chef Brian Poe's annual Burrito Bowl event.  Held each year on Super Bowl weekend, local Chefs are invited to pick a team and and create a burrito inspired by them.  Pictured above is Chef José Duarte and team Taranta, a former winner, who chose the Dolphins, obviously, as their team.

Guests are invited to sample all the burritos and cast their vote for the winner.  There were lots to choose from.

Some of the participating restaurants really got into the mood of the competition.  Jimmy Christensen (l) and Chef Brian Roche (r) of Lolita, champions of last year's Burrito Bowl.

Patrón was there serving up tequila drinks for the crowd.

The ultimate winner was Chef Jason Hutchinson and his team from Boloco, who I called as the winner long before the votes were cast.  It was definitely and inspired sample:

Avocado Bebida – chilled creamy avocado cooler, with a touch of agave, milk and lime juice.  This was served in a shot glass rimmed with a smoked sea salt sugar blend, and garnished with a pickled Serrano chile and umbrella.  The idea of this is to take a bite of the pickled Serrano, and chase with the creamy Bebida to balance the acidity of the pickle and temper the heat from the chile with the avocado and milk.  Very traditional, and the crowd seemed to enjoy it.

Soft Corn Taco – Warm soft corn tortilla painted with ancho chile corn crema, topped with 18 hour carnitas pork, tortilla crumbs, pan fried Queso Blanco, chipotle salsa sour cream and topped with a jicama & poblano slaw.

Congratulations Jason, a competitor every year, on your long overdue win!  Here judges Jenny Johnson, Scott Kearnan and Dan McCarthy present the Chef with the coveted 1st Prize piñata.

And if you missed the event and love chili you can attend the fourth annual Boston Chili Cup competition at Ned Devines this Thursday, February 21.  Sample over twenty chili dishes for only $10.00.  I'll be one of the judges so I'll definitely see you there!
