2009 - The Year of Comfort

The City is in the throes of preparation for our annual "First Night" celebration in Boston, the very birthplace of the original First Night concept now celebrated all over the country and the world. Singers, dancers, artists and performers of all kinds will delight the near one million visitors who will make the snowy trek into Boston. At 1:00 a.m. an army of city workers and volunteers will sweep through the City clearing the revelers debris. All the food stories and blogs I have been following predict 2009 to be the year of comfort food as far as new trends go. After this celebration one can be sure that comfort will be the next sweet celebration.

A ton of ice is delivered to Boston Common to begin transformation into a lighted sculpture of temporary art.

The TV camera crews ready to capture the festivities.

The horse-mounted Boston Police are ready.

The final shapes coming into form 24 hours later as the snow flies and the temperatures plunge. Perfect weather for sculpting ice.

When complete, this work will showcase Hawaiian surfers riding a pipeline wave. How apropos for the near white-out snow conditions!
