Virgil's Real Barbecue
We recently ate at Virgil's Real Barbecue on our trip to Mohegan Sun and enjoyed the relaxed, casual atmosphere in this sprawling 225 seat emporium to all things barbecue. Virgil's is one of the newer restaurants at Mohegan.
We got a small clue as to what we ere getting into when these "napkins" were spotted on the table. there is no question that it can get messy.
I went all out and ordered The Pig Out: Memphis Style Pork Spare Ribs, Sliced Texas Beef Brisket, Carolina Pulled Pork and a Barbecued 1/4 Chicken. What a feast! My favorites were the Brisket, tender and perfectly spiced and the Barbecued Chicken, not all all dry and full of flavor.
For one of our sides we had the Mac and Cheese, a perfectly comforting dish of cheesy elbow macaroni, filling dish in and of itself but also excellent as a shared plate.
Dean went with the Carolina Pulled Pork Sandwich, heavily laden with a mound of rich, tangy pulled pork that was shredded to excellence. The coleslaw was also great, sweeter than some we have had before but it matched well with the barbecue sauce and was extremely fresh.
The Buttermilk Biscuits and Corn Bread are not to be missed. The biscuits were warm and velvety with all of the flaky goodness one would expect from a classic, homemade biscuit.
We were so stuffed that there was no room to even think of dessert although the selection was tempting. If you're at Mohegan enjoying a weekend, seeing a show or just having a day of fun with friends we'd highly suggest you visit if you just want to kick back for a few hours and feast.
