Saus

We just love smaller, independently-owned places that, once you step inside, seem to whisk you away to another part of the world. One of our favorite countries is Belgium. We always love the time spent in Antwerpen and Brussels and the food, wherever you go, is always excellent. So, our recent visit to Saus, the new eatery in Boston was really a very pleasant surprise.

The menu at Saus is pretty simple: Pommes Frites, Poutine, Deep Fried Egg and Belgian Liège Waffles. Liège is a major city in Belgium, after which the waffles are named.


Belgians are huge fans of comics and graphic novels. While in Brussels we visited the Comic Strip Center, one of the most popular destinations in the capital city.


The place is cozy and definitely has a European flavor with black and white photos of the famous, small storybook village of Bruges. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to wander around inside a Bothers Grimm fairy tale, that's exactly what Bruges looks like.


The Pommes Frites are fried twice, which is what sets the Belgian recipe above standard fries.


We tried every, single one of the dipping sauces. While there is certainly something to please all palates here our favorites were: Saturday Night Chive, Bacon Parmesan, Cheddar and Duvel Ale (a true standout) and Vampire Slayer.


In addition to all of the regular dipping sauces there are also weekly specials.


The waffles are made with pearl sugar just like they do in Belgium. We tried all of the sauces and our favorite was the lemon cream, adding a contrasting tartness to the sweet waffle. Diners at tables near us were already on their second visit, happy to admit they were hooked on the salted caramel sauce.


Soft and buttery on the inside with a perfectly crisped crust, these are about as authentic as you can get in Boston.


The famous, intrepid Belgian cartoon character with the blond flip haircut, Tin Tin, is featured prominently at Saus.

We predict that Saus is going to be very popular given their location (near the Bell In Hand and Purple Shamrock) and late night hours.
