We happened to be in and around the southern Maine coast recently so we decided to stop in at Stonewall Kitchen Corporate Headquarters, Shop, Cafe and Cooking School. It's quite a complex set in a beautiful country setting.

Of course, one of the many reasons to visit is the opportunity to taste test a large variety of the many sauces, jams and jellies that Stonewall Kitchen is famous for. The assortment is bewildering but if you are looking for a new twist to a classic recipe we are pretty sure you can find it here.

The lunch crowd was filing in, sitting inside at the granite tables and outside at the picnic tables. So, we decided to take a lunch break.


Pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries.

We opted for the pulled pork sandwich, slow roasted pork simmered in their own Maple Chipotle Grille Sauce topped with cheddar cheese on a bulkie roll. As the side we chose the sweet potato fries. The sandwich was great, just what you'd expect a classic pulled pork to be, meaty and sweet. The Cafe committed the ultimate restaurant faux pas, however, by serving us the fries cold. Not good. This indicates two problems. One, the fries are probably not freshly made. If they were there is no way they could be cold. Two, this is not a minor oversight but a major production flaw. Unforgivable in the restaurant business. Somebody in charge is clearly not doing what they should be doing.

It's a great place to visit and see all the products in a very nice setting. There is plenty of parking and the grounds are well maintained and clean. We'd suggest you stop by for a visit and review of the products but skip the lunch. There are too many other great options for dining in the area. They also hold cooking classes on a regular basis featuring local cookbook authors and chefs.
